The matrimandir is the center and heart of Auroville. A sphere covered with gold disks, it was undergoing extensive renovation while I was there. Visitors were only allowed to the outside and into one of the "petals" - the red structures at the bottom, which are meditation chapels. Here is a close up of the restoration work which included resurfacing the moisture barrier, necessitating the removal of the gold disks.
